K-Series Oil System Upgrades - Under Pressure
HyTech's smoothing process on the oil pump's output side is obvious. This increases both oil pressure and volume. Like most castings the factory joint is rough, which resists optimal oil flow-not a problem when using Honda's recommended 5W-20 oil but use anything thicker and flow will suffer.
It's easy to see HyTech's flow-enhancing modifications on the left. Note: HyTech does not modify the spring. This is a no-no. You'll have to read the story to find out why.
An S2000 pump and pickup swap will increase flow and pressure but will also create its own set of problems. For one, the '06 and up Si oil pan won't work here and swapping to something else means that '06 and up Si oil pan engine mount won't fit either.
I-VTEC heads require lots of oil. Swapping in stiffer valve springs or aftermarket cams can exhibit excessive wear due to the number two cam tower's rather small oiling holes.
HyTech installs a tee in front of the factory oil pressure sensor to introduce more oil to the head. A -3 line routes from the tee to the head, ensuring an adequate supply for those 9,500rpm runs and big cams.
A preexisting 6mm threaded hole makes cam tower number five the ideal place for tapping into.
HyTech proprietor John Grudynski machines the oil channel into the cam tower. Though it's rather simple, it's not something you can do with hand tools.
The Type S oil pump rotor is smaller than the S2000's, hence the difference in oil pump speeds.
Here's the final connection.
