The Details:

  • First factory turbocharged Honda Civic Type R with 2.0L engine producing 276bhp
  • Honda aspires to make it the fastest front-wheel drive around the Nurburgring track
  • On sale 2015
  • Honda Civic Tourer also claimed to feature 74 mpg.

The light and agile Honda Civic has always had a special place in our hearts. It's unfortunate though that here in the states we have been limited to the SI model and lost out on the premier Type R variant. Short of importing one in, all we can really do is convert our Hondas to Type R trim as best as possible. Well, the next generation 2015 Honda Civic Type R has been confirmed but, again, don't expect to see it sold in America. In 2010, the Civic Type R met the cutting board. Today it was revealed at a 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show press conference in Germany that a 2015 model will arrive and it will carry a performance level higher than any past models before it, according to Manabu Nishimae, President of Honda Motor Europe.

Unlike the past naturally aspirated Civic Type R, the brand new 2015 model will be a direct injected turbocharged 2.0-liter engine that produces a claimed 276bhp. It will remain front-wheel drive and of course be a compact, and agile chassis.

Honda's objective is to make its brand new Type R the fastest front wheel drive car around at the famed Nurburgring track in Germany. It's a bold statement for a car that still faces two years of development before going on sale in 2015. "We have recently spent a week at the Nurburgring, carrying out extensive testing and we are on target, and have already set a time approaching a lap record", said Manabu Nishimae. Honda's WTCC driver Gabriele Tarquini was enlisted for the vehicle shakedown and handling development.

Also revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show was the Civic Tourer. During the same press conference, Honda claimed the Tourer's 1.6 i-DTEC diesel engine will provide an amazing 74.3 mpg rating as well as an impressively low C02 emissions rating from only 99g/km* (3.8 liters l/100km). Move over Toyota Prius. The Civic Tourer is a 5-door providing plenty of boot space and practicality.

Adrian Killham, Honda Civic Tourer's Large Project Leader says, "For me, the strength of the car is the synergy of functionality, versatility, and dynamic design. As a European development team, we're passionate and proud about what we've achieved."
