In current trim, the EK makes 246 hp and 178 lb-ft torque. Song pulled every bang possible out of it up to 8100 rpm, but plans to retune with 440cc injectors and A'PEXi Power FC, enabling the motor to run somewhere between 9-10K rpm.But the grand plan calls for a new motor altogether, this time a B18C5 with 85mm bore, which Song says will get him over the 250-hp hump. Damn; 250 horses pulling 2,200 pounds. Do the math. Actually, you'll have to since we never made it that far in high school. We're better with words anyway and we know two words to perfectly describe this car. The second is "fast" and the first-which also starts with "f"-shouldn't be used in polite company.
If Song's CTR is any indication of the freedoms and privileges that come with owning one's own slice of the capitalist dream, I'm off to have a word with my loan officer-and my boss.
Bolts&WashersLoi Song's 1996 Civic Type-RPropulsion:Song's EK hauls ass thanks to a B18C (JDM Integra Type R) powerplant, balanced and blueprinted by Laskey Racing and machined by Benson. The 85mm bore/stroke raises displacement to 2.0-liters. Attached to the micropolished Type R crankshaft, buffered by ACL bearings, are Eagle rods secured by ARP bolts. On the other end of those rods are CP 85mm pistons yielding a 12.1 compression ratio.
Up top in the cylinder head, ported and polished by Stan @ DV/DT Engineering, is a Toda fiesta: Spec C cams, cam gears, springs and retainers. Valves and rockers remain stock issue.
Toda gear also handles most respiration duties, the B18C breathing in through Sports Injection ITBs and exhaling through its header and a Spoon N1 exhaust with custom piping by Sportcar Motion's John Rusakoff. A Toda oil pump gear also ensures the engine stays wet.
A Walbro 255/lph fuel pump feeds the B18C's fire, pumped through Earl's lines and Toda fuel rail and sprayed through 370cc Race Engineering injectors, with an Aeromotive FPR regulating. NGK Iridium plugs and wires, an MSD cap and rotor and MSD SCI ignition set the mixture alive. Currently Song runs Hondata engine management, but plans to switch to APEXi Power FC when he steps up to larger 440cc injectors.
If you hadn't guessed, Song is a fan of Toda product, and uses more of it in the '98 ITR transmission. A stock 4:78 final drive is complemented with Toda race clutch and flywheel, and - key for a purpose-built track car - a KAAZ limited-slip diff.
Finally, DV/DT Sportcar Motion-fabricated mounts (soon available to the public, Song says) hold the engine in place.
Stance:No skimping here. Song opted for JIC Flt-a2 coilovers with a Skunk2 camber kit, offering a highly adjustable setup for various track conditions.
Resistance:11.8-inch Project Mu rotors, pads and fluid work with stock calipers and Earl's stainless lines to slow the EK to a crawl.
Rims& Rubber:Gunmetal, 16-inch Work Emotion CRs form the EK9's rolling stock, along with Toyo RA-1 205/45/16 rubber forming the contact patch.
Fashion:Outside: nothing fancy, just a tasteful JDM factory body kit and all-around Championship White paint job.Inside: What's left of most of the interior includes Sparco Pro 2000 seats and Takata harnesses to cinch down occupants. Direction is determined by a MOMO Monte Carlo steering wheel, while an ARC shift knob offers grip for quick shifts. Defi BF gauges keep tabs on oil and water temps.
