Chris Fowler's '98 Civic CX
Propulsion
No playing around here. Fowler opted for '98 JDM Integra Type R horsepower underhood, a B18C at 12:1 compression and stuffed with Endyn Rollerwave pistons and Wiseco rings, Eagle rods and rod bolts, and ARP head bolts. A Mugen oil pan, Hamp oil filter and Spoon drain plug round out the minimal mods to the bottom end and a guy named Stew at 40th National in Tacoma - no longer in business - assembled it.
Up top, Fowler loaded the stock cylinder head with Jun Stage 3 cams regulated by Spoon cam gears, Jun dual springs and titanium retainers. Valves and rockers remain stock issue and Fowler wisely left the head alone (no porting). Bolt-ons include a J's Racing intake pipe connected to a stock throttle body and intake manifold upstream. The header is a 4-1 prototype from the Sacramento boys at Danny Tran Racing Fabrication (DTR Fab), blowing smoke out through an Omni Power test pipe and a Type One Racing exhaust.
The EK-R's fuel system begins with a Walbro pump, pushing gas through steel braided lines into a high flow fuel rail and out thorough RC Engineering 310 injectors. NGK plugs and plug wires light up the mixture. An APEXi V-AFC fuel controller works in tandem with the Jun-tuned ECU ("authentic, not a copy," Fowler notes) to control fuel and timing.
Putting it all to the ground is the work of a JDM B16A 5-speed trans with ACT fortification: clutch, Extreme pressure plate and Prolite flywheel. A Quaife differential keeps the tires on lock through the G-loading.
Evidence
The EK pumps out 212 hp on the dyno.
Stance
Section eight-way adjustable coil-overs prop the car at all corners, with fine-tuning handled by Skunk2 camber kits front and rear. Other chassis upgrades include a Cusco six-point roll cage, Spoon strut tower bars, Omni Power lower control arms, Skunkworks (pre-Skunk2) lower tie bar, and Civic Si sway bars front and rear.
Resistance
More Type-R love: rotors and calipers come from a Civic Type-R, with the master cylinder wrenched from an ITR. Hawk pads and Goodridge lines complete the stop package.
Rims & Rubber
Gold Advan RG wheels in 16x7.5 trim with +45 offset (114.3 x 5 bolt pattern) spin with Yokohama ES-100 (205/45-16) coverings.
Fashion
Outside: Fowler and friend Mark Curtis prepped the car before Curtis sprayed it with Dupont Chromabase Electron Pearl Blue. Up front is a '99-2000 CTR front end conversion with more CTR goodness in the form of rear lips, wing, door moldings, mirrors, grille and side marker lights. From Japan, Fowler sourced Honda Access yellow fog lights and door visors. Spoon tow hooks add a final touch.
Inside: Bride Brix buckets keep driver and front passenger in place (with SRR four-point harnesses, while rear seat passengers perch atop CTR padding. Fowler's steering inputs are handled with a Spoon wheel and NRG removable hub, and downshifts aided by a Spoon shift knob. CTR touches inside abound: pedals, gauge cluster, door panel inserts, carpet. A B&M fuel pressure gauge keeps tabs on the precious fluid. Finally, the Cusco roll cage was also sprayed with House of Colors Candy Red tri-stage.
ICE: Sourced from the homeland, a Gathers double-DIN head unit incorporating cassette and 3 MiniDisc player pump audio into the cabin.
