We wanted to get this car in our pages pronto, so we didn't stick around long enough for dyno testing, which Hina plans to do shortly after we go to press with this issue. He explains the B16 has received little in the block-strengthening department, so he keeps boost to a modest 8 psi. Should anything go awry, he has multiple backup B16As waiting for the call.
For any psychologists, social scientists and anthropologists interested in documenting the excess of Honda obsession, we have at least one candidate you should contact.
Bolts&WashersNoel Hina's '95 Del Sol
PropulsionHina's B16A3 retains the stock bore/stroke ratio and measures in at 1.6 liters with static compression of 10.2:1. ARP rod bolts clamp down the factory rods, but that's the extent of internal work. Inside the ported and polished (and flowbench tested at Sportcar Motion) cylinder head are Integra Type R valves, valve springs and camshafts, with Skunk2 adjustable cam gears outside regulating the bumpsticks. ARP head studs hold top and bottom together.
The 60-1 compressor wheel of the Garrett T3/T4 turbo forces air out of the compressor housing into 2.5-inch custom intercooler piping fabbed by Sportcar's Rusakoff. It then passes through the XS Engineering 24x11x3 GTR intercooler, and finally into an OEM Integra Type R throttle body. A Walbro 255-liter/hr fuel pump feeds massive GReddy 720cc injectors, delivering the charge to NGK Iridium IX spark plugs ignited through MSD plug wires. An A'PEXi Power FC standalone computer allows for detuning the GReddy injectors for "normal" driving and also puts the Del into a boost-friendly state of mind. Boost control is programmed through the Power FC and monitored with a Defi two-bar boost gauge. A B&M fuel pressure regulator helps keeps everything even.
Spent exhaust gases exit through a Spark Racing turbo manifold while a 38mm TiAL wastegate mandates boost to 8 psi. Leftover gases funnel through a Sportcar Motion-fabricated downpipe and out of a stainless-steel Espelir JGT 500 exhaust. Between shifts, an HKS Super Sequential blow-off valve relieves pressure.
Gearing in the Y21 transmission remains stock, but the powertrain does receive upgrades like Integra Type R limited-slip diff, Competition Clutch lightened flywheel and street/strip clutch. The single diaphragm clutch is comprised of an upgraded pressure plate and a six-puck disc constructed of ceramic materials.
Rims & RubberMugen RnR wheels of the black, 15-inch variety-wrapped in 205/50-15 Toyo FZ4s-constitute the rubber-to-pavement connection.
StanceTEIN Super Street dampers with the upper pillow-ball mount option are accompanied by an Ingalls camber adjustment kit. Mugen strut tower bars at both ends stiffen up the chassis. A Spoon rear lower tie bar sharpens the Del Sol's responses.
ResistancePowerstop cross-drilled rotors work in concert with Axxis MetalMaster semi-metallic pads. The lifeblood of the Del's stopping system consists of Motul DOT 4 fluid.
FashionBody: The goal was a Mugen/JDM vibe, without eliciting too much attention at the same time. Front body mods include a Mugen bumper, JDM EG2 fog lights and fenders, and side marker lights. Out back lies a Mugen wing and a JDM EG2 license plate block out.
Inside:The stock seats were ditched in favor of a pair of Recaro SRDs. Once planted, Hina navigates via a Mugen FG360 steering wheel mated to a NRG quick release hub adapter. Mugen pedals and shift knob, and an Integra Type R shift boot add the details that only JDM aficionados can truly appreciate.
Ice:A Clarion DV935 monitor/DVD player runs the audio and visuals while a Rockford Fosgate P300 amp and two 8-inch Kicker DVC subwoofers boost the low end when coupled with the JDM Gathers speakers. When he's angered his wife, Hina whiles away the hours until her contentment with a Nintendo GameCube.
