Two thousand eleven turned out to be quite a good year for Hondas in the realm of intense time attack. At the annual Super Lap Battle Finals, held at Buttonwillow Raceway, the motorsports world witnessed two records being broken, along with three wins for the Honda/Acura camp. First up was the jaw-dropping 1:40.981 produced by the infamous FXMD ’91 NSX. Their efforts edged out Sierra Sierra’s AWD Evo and its previous lap record of 1:41.046. For all of the math majors out there, that’s only a .065-second difference. To get to this record-breaking time the FXMD had gone through extensive testing throughout the year, adding more aero and engine tuning. To effectively wring every bit of performance from the new setup, they called upon Formula D and Grand Am driver Tyler McQuarrie.
Regaining the Limited FF class record was Sportcar Motion’s ’98 Integra Type-R piloted by future doctor Tim Kuo. Blasting a 1:54.789, Kuo and Sportcar Motion found vengeance against the Mitsubishi Eclipse that had previously bested SCM’s old record in a Civic hatchback.
Logging the third win for the Honda group was the always-impressive Evasive S2000 in Street FR. In the off-season Evasive had looked carefully at ways to refine the Voltex aero, adding a flat bottom diffuser and actually chassis mounting the rear wing rather than relying on the thin trunk lid. Still wanting to keep with the naturally aspirated roots of the S2000, they turned to engine tuning by adding an AEM ECU to fine-tune the existing bolt-on parts. At the end of the day they weren’t able to best their record time but were able to win their class with a time of 1:57.887.
With an NSX snatching the coveted Overall and Unlimited FR record, an Integra taking back the record in Limited FF, and an S2000 winning the Street FR class, the Honda badge was well represented at this year’s SLB event. For all you track junkies out there, there’s one thing we’d like to see for 2012: a Honda bringing home the Street FF record. The last time a Honda held the title was the Evasive Si sedan in 2008. A Ford Focus with a time of 1:59.086 currently holds the record—something to keep in mind if you’re building a street class Civic or Integra for competition.
